Recruitment—Prof Dennis Lam's team

 Description: New positions - Professor/Associate Professor, Postdoctoral Fellow, and Research Assistant - are available immediately in the State Key Lab of Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center (ZOC) led by Prof. S.C. Dennis Lam, MD, Director of the State Key Lab of Ophthalmology at ZOC of Sun Yat-sen University.

 

Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center (ZOC) of the Sun Yat-Sen University (SYSU) is the largest eye service provider and the most productive research center in China. It is strongly committed to both basic and clinical research. The State Key Laboratory (SKL) of Ophthalmology at Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center (ZOC) of the Sun Yat-Sen University (SYSU) is the only SKL of Ophthalmology in China, thus receiving with ample governmental support and funding. The SKL is firmly committed to pushing its research frontiers further. 

The Director of the State Key Lab of Ophthalmology at ZOC, Professor S.C. Dennis Lam, takes strong interests in clinical research and has also initiated important basic research work in Ophthalmology. The research currently carried out by Prof. S.C. Dennis Lam in the State Key Lab can be broadly divided into the following areas:

       New Drug Development for eye diseases, including:

     macular diseases, especially diabetic macular edema, diabetic retinopathy, choroidal neovascularization, and age-related macular degeneration

     Neurodegenerative diseases, e.g. glaucoma, optic neuropathy etc.

       Stem Cell Therapy for eye diseases

       Translational research in ophthalmic therapeutics.

       Genetic mechanisms and pathology of myopia, glaucoma and macular degeneration.

Now Prof. S.C. Dennis Lam’s team is inviting high-caliber candidates to fill the following vacancy:

We are seeking world-class group core members in all stages of their careers with a Ph.D., M.D., or M.D./Ph.D. degree in biological sciences.

Requirements

     A good track record of research, grants and publications in high impact international journals, commensurate with their seniority

     Commitment to contribute to the development of biomedical sciences in China. Preference will be given to those with expertise in cell biology and/or molecular biology and areas of interest that are synergistic to the above areas.

 

     The appointee(s) will be appointed to the State Key Lab of Ophthalmology at ZOC. Teaching duties for postgraduate courses will be assigned with reference to the expertise of the appointee(s).

Appointment(s) initially will be made on contract basis for one year commencing as soon as possible, renewable subject to mutual agreement.

2.      Postdoctoral Fellow

 

New Drug Development and Stem Cell Therapy for eye diseases research:

Requirements:

We are looking for a highly self-motivated and creative individual with a Ph.D., M.D., or M.D./Ph.D. degree in biological sciences.

     Familiarity with cell and/or molecular biology technologies such as cell culture, cloning, and gene expression;

     Good interpersonal skills;

     A strong sense of responsibility and self-motivation; and

     The ability to work independently.

Preference will be given to those with experience in ophthalmic research specifically in the cell biology, molecular biology, genome study and good publication record.

The appointee will work on various experiments related to cellular and molecular research in ocular diseases. Appointment will be made on contract basis for one year, renewable subject to mutual agreement.

3.      Research Assistant 

 

Major Responsibilities:

Coordinate research for ongoing and new projects. The candidate shall be expected to work on the following aspects:

       Assisting in research on cell biology, molecular biology, animal work, etc.

       Assisting in field work, such as data collection activities;

       Work in teams to design evaluation tools and formats based on pre-defined goals and indicators

       Design, conduct and coordinate field level surveys

       Collect, enter and analyse research data and co-ordinate research studies

       Prepare various documents in relation to research results and maintain an updated database of information and write scientific papers and reports

       Work closely and collaborate with the director of State Key Lab of Ophthalmology and perform other tasks as assigned

Requirements:

       Bachelor degree or above in Biomedical Sciences, Molecular Biology or Biochemistry

       Excellent command of both written and spoken English

       Able to handle work pressures and deliver under tight schedules

       Able to work well in teams and lead teams, when required to do so

       Good communication, analytical, interpersonal and computer skills
