Center of Cataract & Others Lens Diseases
Overview
The Center of Cataract and Other Lens Diseases, was co-founded by Professor Mao Wenshu and Professor Li Shaozhen in 1965, and is now one of the oldest Departments in Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center. In 1984 and 1989, the Department was authorized to award master and doctorate degrees in Ophthalmology respectively. In 2004, it was awarded as a key subspecialty in Guangdong. In 2011, the first “Home of Pediatric Cataract Patients” in China, was founded in Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center. The last decade has witnessed considerable progress in the Department, covering medical services, teaching, training, scientific research and poverty alleviation; while our Department has become a first-class diagnosis and treatment center of lens diseases both domestic/abroad.
The Department now has 6 Professors, 4 Associate Professors, 4 Attending Doctors, including 10 supervisors for postgraduate students. The number of outpatients is more than 80,000 and the number of surgical procedures exceeds 20,000 annually. Specifically, on an outpatient and “one-day ward” basis, the Department has the most cataract patients and conducts the most surgical procedures in China.
Research and Studies
Our present research focuses on lens regeneration, pathogenesis of congenital cataracts, prevention of posterior capsular opacification and the development of artificial intelligence in ophthalmology.
Our Department has had published more than 200 articles, in prestigious journals like Nature, Science, Lancet, Ophthalmology and IOVS. The Department has received more than 80 national grants; two of which are included in the first-rank research project of the “973 Program”. The Department has been awarded one first-rank national prize and 19 provincial prizes.
