Ocular Trauma Department
Overview
Ocular Trauma Department was co-founded by Chen Lianai, Zhong Guoqing, Wen Xianggen and etc in 1980, which was one of the earliest ocular trauma departments in China. There are 3 professors, 3 associate professors, 4 attending doctors, 1 doctorial supervisor and 3 master supervisors in this department.
Our hospital established first ocular emergency in China, which can provide high quality care and one-stop service for emergent patients. In order to develop better ocular traumatic emergency department, daycare ward was set up, as well as other supporting facility such as infection isolation ward and post-anesthesia intensive care unit.
As national referral center for comprehensive ocular traumatic patients, our ocular traumatic department achieved first-class level both domestic and aboard in diagnosis treatment of post-traumatic complex orbital fractures, severe eyelid malformation, complicated vitreoretinopathy, infectious ocular disease, complex ciliary-body disease and severe ocular chemical burn. Furthermore, as one of training base for specialized traumatic doctor, our department trained more than 100 doctors from all over the country.
Faculty
Professor Lin Xiaofeng
Chief physician, professor, doctoral supervisor. Deputy director of Zhongshan Ophthalmological Center, Sun Yat-Sen University and vice president of the hospital. Group member of Ocular Trauma Department in Chinese Ophthalmological Society. Engaged in clinical, teaching and research work for 30 years. Profestional in traumatic cataract, lens dislocation, ciliary body damage, retinal detachment, intraocular foreign body, vitreous body hemorrhage and other serious ocular trauma. Had a thorough research on the diagnosis and treatment of infectious endophthalmitis. Pioneered the application of multi-point retinal electrical incision for the treatment of complicated retinal detachment. Devoted to the research work on the artificial visual pathway reconstruction.
Professor Zheng Yongxin
Chief physician, master supervisor, head of Ocular Trauma Department, Zhongshan Ophthalmological Center, Sun Yat-Sen University. Engaged in clinical and research work for thirty years. Specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of orbital bone fracture, intraorbital bodies, and other orbital trauma, retinal and optic nerve injury. Responsible for many Natural Science Fund projects of China and Guangdong Province. Published more than 30 papers in domestic and foreign journals.
Professor Long Chongde
Doctor of Medicine, associate chief physician, master supervisor. Good at diagnosis and treatment of ocular trauma in various specialties, traumatic cataract, lens dislocation, ocular chemical injury and other complicated ocular trauma. Specializes in ophthalmic emergency repair, traumatic cataract extraction combined with intraocular lens implantation, lens extraction of dislocated lens, secondary intraocular lens implantation, vitrectomy, retinal reattachment and intraocular foreign bodies removal.
Associate Professor Luo Yiwen
Deputy chief physician. Good at diagnosis and treatment of all sorts of ocular trauma and endophthalmitis, especially at the extraction of intraocular foreign body, vitrectomy, traumatic retinal reattachment, open ocular trauma repair, traumatic cataract extraction combined with intraocular lens implantation, extraction of dislocated lens, and secondary intraocular lens implantation.
Associate Professor He Liwen
Doctor of Medicine, deputy chief physician. Awarded a MD degree by University of Freiburg in Germany at 2005. Specializes in clinical treatment of various ocular mechanical and chemical injury, especially in diagnosis and surgical treatment of open ocular trauma, iris and ciliary body trauma, traumatic cataract, traumatic lens dislocation, traumatic vitreoretinopathy, intraocular foreign body and suppurative endophthalmitis.
Associate Professor Yuan Zhaohui
Associate chief physician, doctor of medicine, master supervisor. Specializes in emergency surgical treatment of severe ocular trauma, repair and reconstruction surgery for intraocular tissues at recovery stage, such as traumatic cataract, lens dislocation, retinal detachment, vitreous hemorrhage, intraocular foreign body, proliferative vitreoretinopathy, suppurative endophthalmitis and bulbi phthisis. Member of expert group responsible for standardized training of resident physicians in Ophthalmological Center of Zhongshan University, focusing on the training of ophthalmic microsurgery skills. Had in-depth study in the prevention and treatment of penetrating eye injury, infectious endophthalmitis, traumatic PVR and recurrent corneal erosion.
Foreign exchange activity
The joint research with City University of Hong Kong, “Experimental research in color vision pathway remodeling with Foldable-Capsular-Vitreous-Body binding optic nerve chip”, was leaded by Professor Xiaofeng Lin. Foldable-Capsular-Vitreous-Body, the key part of the research, was developed solely by our ophthalmic center. This research aimed at exploring best intraocular stimulating methods for visual prosthesis, amending key technique for natural vision remodeling, laying a solid scientific foundation for future ideal prosthesis.
Optic nerve injury is an important cause of irreversible traumatic visual impairment. Post traumatic regeneration and protection in optic nerve is one of the cutting edge research in ocular traumatic area. Our ocular traumatic department had established cooperation with Schepens Eye Research Institution of Harvard University.
Professor Xiaofeng Lin was invited to act as Editorial Board Member of the Journal Asia-Pacific Journal of Ophthalmology.
The Introduction of Academic Achievements
1) We developed our own intraocular rare earth magnet with independent intellectual property rights, which has been widely promoted and applied in the minimally invasive of the extraction of magnetic intraocular foreign bodies, with its advantages of exquisite, accuracy, operating simply and disinfecting easily.
2) We initiatively researched multipoint retinotomy in the treatment of recurrent retinal detachment of silicone oil eyes. The single-arm, small sample exploratory clinical trials have been completed. And our results preliminarily proved its feasibility, effectiveness and security.
3) As the lead department, ocular trauma department participates in the 863 plan, multi-centric clinical study of Clinical Trial and Production of Foldable Capsular Vitreous Body, which has verified the effectiveness and security of foldable capsular vitreous body. It brings hope to patients who are suffering from complex vitreous retinopathy that could not reach to a good reattachment situation only by silicone oil/heavy silicone oil.
4) The application of endoscopy assisted pas plana vitrectomy provides the patients who have no traditional vitreous surgery indications with hope for surgery.
5) We initiatively utilized Digital three dimensional (3D) printing implantation materials in reconstructive surgery to orbital bone defect.
6) Our department undertakes multiterm national and provincial science and technology key projects, including the research of the pathogenesis of infectious endophthalmitis, the regulatory mechanism of optic nerve injury repair, alkaline injured corneal neovascularization, the application of mbryonic stem cells in ocular surface reconstruction with ocular chemical injury, the mechanism of Choroid neovascularization research, etc.
7) The program of the application of retinotomy won second prize of Guangdong Province Medicine and Health Scientific Advancement Award.
