The Department of Glaucoma Service
Overview
The Department of Glaucoma Service (the Glaucoma Center) at ZOC was established by Prof. Wenbing Zhou, the founder of the Chinese Glaucoma Society (CGS) in 1950’s. As the earliest specialized department of glaucoma service in China, numbers of illustrious glaucoma experts (Profs. Tiancai Ye, Meili Zhang, Dawei Peng, Shouxiong Peng, et al.) were trained and established here. The Glaucoma Center has always been recognized as one of the leading institutions all over China due to its leading technology in glaucoma diagnosis and treatment. Under the guidance of academic leaders such as Prof. Jian Ge (the first chief scientist of the “National Key Basic Research Program of China (973 Program)” and Honorary Chairman of the Chinese Ophthalmological Society (COS)), Prof. Minbin Yu (Deputy Chairman of COS, Deputy Secretary of the CPC of Sun Yat-sen University) and the department director, Prof. Mingkai Lin, an extinguished team has been well established. Besides, Profs. Yehong Zhuo, Xing Liu and Xiulan Zhang have been playing crucial academic influence. The team of glaucoma center is now investigating the comprehensive and cutting-edge fields in clinical and scientific research, such as pathogenesis, early diagnosis, individualized treatment and precisely-targeted intervention, treatment for refractory and complicated glaucoma, neuroprotection, stem cell therapy, et al. The department initiated the first edition of the Diagnosis and Staging Criteria of Primary Angle-Closure Glaucoma (PACG) in China (1984) and following editions of Glaucoma Guidelines and Expert Consensus in China since 1987. As the leading institution for complicated and refractory glaucoma service in China, the department manages an annual workload of 45,000 outpatients (non-local cases over 70%), 3,000 inpatients and over 3,500 surgeries.
Leading by Prof. Mingkai Lin (Director), Prof. Xing Liu (Senior Consultant), and Prof. Zhigang Fan (Deputy Director), there are 8 professors, 4 associate professors, 8 attending doctors, 1 deputy director nurse and 1 deputy chief technician are now serving in the department, which is now the Key Specialty of Guangdong Province. Numbers of founding supports have been obtained during recent years, including National Natural Science Foundation of China (25 projects), National High Technology Research and Development Program of China (873 Program, 1 project), Key Clinical Projects of the Ministry of Health of China (1 project), Natural Science Foundation of Guangdong Province (over 30 projects), Science Foundation of Bureau level (over 10 projects), and International Cooperation Project (3 projects). In 2010, Glaucoma Center received the second prize of National Scientific and Technology Advance Award by the State Council of China. As the chief editor, we’ve published 3 textbooks of ophthalmology and other monographs, such as 《Clinical Glaucoma》, 《Selected Simulated Tests for Ophthalmology》and《Optical Coherence Tomography in Clinical Ophthalmology》(awarded Guangdong Province excellent science and technology monograph publishing fund) et al. Over 300 academic peer-reviewed papers (over 250 SCI) were published.
The Glaucoma Center has 8 doctoral supervisors and 4 master supervisors, training more than 20 master and doctoral graduates every year. As for clinical training, there are more than 50 doctors trained in a continuous education program annually. It’s also the largest and major Standardized Training Base for domestic ophthalmologists and glaucoma specialty fellows. In 2010, Patients’ Club for Glaucoma, titled “Glaucoma Home”, was established, serving for educational programs, volunteer consultations, enhancing communication between doctors and patients, and popularization of glaucoma related knowledges.
