Department of Pharmacy

Department of Pharmacy is a comprehensive platform for clinical purposes, combining pharmaceutical services, research, and teaching with pharmaceutical management. It is responsible for drug use in a safe and rational manner, medicine for research and production, and quality of medicine. Department of Pharmacy works as a professional department in combination of medical services, teaching and research. The Department's field includes clinical practices, new drug development, pharmacological information and its computational application for drug use. It is a professional department featuring the combination of medical services, teaching and research. Department of Pharmacy consists of several parts: namely Pharmacy, Pharmacy for Chinese Medicine, Pharmacy for Inpatient Services, Medicine Storehouse, Pharmacy for Clinical Services, Medicine for Ophthalmic Uses, Room for Quality Inspection, Room for New Drug Development. The current head of the Department is Ms. Tang Xilan while Mr. Ye Chengtian and Mr. Wu Wei serve as the vice head.

1.Talents in Department of Pharmacy

At present, we have 34 professionals in the department. Of the 34 experts, one is chief pharmacist, three are associate chief pharmacist and 18 are experts with middle title. Seventy percent of our staff earn a Bachelor’s degree while four members have a Master’s degree and three own a PhD. degree. For a decade, staff in Department of Pharmacy have worked together and attached significance to rational drug use and the development of new drugs. We have been in pursuit of progress in the pharmacological discipline and strived for advancement of material goods and knowledge in this field.

2. Excellent Pharmaceutical Services

Department of Pharmacy rigorously follows the principle of transparent purchase on medicine and guarantees a good quality of drugs. We provide the whole hospital with over 800 drugs for clinical uses. Pharmacy for Inpatient Services and Pharmacy for Outpatient Services are in charge of the check and preparation of drugs in prescription. The number of outpatient prescription exceeds 3,000 per day whereas over 320 patients are provided pharmaceutical services for inpatient uses each day. Pharmacy in this department has introduced information management system and open counter services. The system used in pharmacy is linked to doctors’ offices and Cashier. Prescriptions will be printed in labels and each medicine is subject to one label in order to reduce the risk of improper drug preparation. Pharmacists prepare drugs in accordance with labels printed from the system and hence drug safety is ensured and time spent in waiting for drugs is greatly reduced. Pharmacy for Inpatient Services offers medicine by set doses with labels covering information related to patient and prescriptions attached to it. This approach not only offers convenience to pharmacists and nurses but also increases the chance of taking drugs in that patients are more informed compared to the past.

3. Progress on Clinical Uses

Department of Pharmacy has streamlined procedures by making comments and analyses on prescriptions, making ward rounds in the hospital and monitoring ADR. We also set up consultation counter within outpatient services to provide information through hotlines and face-to-face communication. In order to provide easy access for doctors to pharmaceutical information and hence reduce the waste of pharmaceutical uses, Department of Pharmacy shares pharmaceutical information online with other departments in the hospital and input all the basic information of drugs into HIS system (a system designed for categorizing medicine based on the pharmacological uses of each drug).

4. Specially Designed Medicine for Ophthalmic Uses

Department of Pharmacy has successfully produced medicine exclusively designed for ophthalmic uses at home and abroad, such as Phacolysin and Tacrolimus eye drops. The room, Medicine for Ophthalmic Uses has been upgraded in accordance with GPP in December 2008 and is further approved by related government departments at city and provincial levels. Equipped with advanced facilities, the room has become the most developed places for producing ophthalmic medicine in China with more than 71 products produced here worth of over ten million yuan annually. For example, we have introduced production equipment like automatic production lines for eye drops, automatic filling machines for eye paste and quality inspection facilities like HPLC (high performance liquid chromatograph), titer machine, ultraviolet spectrophotometer, osmometer and pH meter. Medicine produced in this room is considered as medicine with high quality and is well acknowledged by doctors, patients and experts in this field.

5. Teaching and Research

Research of the Department centers on rational drug uses in clinical practices, pharmacokinetic analyses of ophthalmic medicine, the development of new ophthalmic medicine, pharmacoeconomic analyses of ophthalmic medicine, and the modernization of Chinese medicine etc. Over the past five years, we have taken the lead in one Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Project, ten projects from Guangdong Provincial Ministry of Chinese, six projects from Medicine Foundation, Guangdong Provincial Pharmacy Association Medicine Foundation and one from New Drug Horizontal Development Project. We have also actively participated in over ten research programs on science and technology at provincial level and published four monographs as editor, which are Pharmacotherapeutics for Eye Disease–Principles and Practices, A Handbook of Ophthalmic Drugs, A Handbook of New Drugs and New Uses of Existing Drugs and A Handbook of New Clinical Drugs. Papers on general practices have been published by journals with high citation rates or by core journals such as PLOS ONE, Chinese Pharmaceutical Journal, Chinese Traditional and Herbal Drugs, and Chinese Journal of Hospital Pharmacy.

Department of Pharmacy is in charge of the ophthalmic drugs used in teaching activities for undergraduate students majoring in optometry and give instructions to postgraduate students of the Center in their use of medicine. Department of Pharmacy also shoulders teaching responsibility for undergraduate and junior college interns majoring in pharmacy.

6. Major Achievements

In 1974, we successfully produced Phacolysin eye drops and were the first place to synthesize Phacolysin (743).

In 1996, we were the first to develop 18 drugs for ophthalmic uses, for example Tobramycin eye drops and eye paste, Compound Tobramycin eye drops and eye paste, Ofloxacin eye drops and eye paste, Dichofenac Sodium eye drops, Weiming eye drops, Aciclovir eye drops and eye paste, and Cyclosporin eye drops. All the drugs for ophthalmic uses aforementioned have received hospital production approval in China.

In March 2010, Tacrolomus eye drops received its new drug approval and became the first in eight years to get new drug approval of chemical drugs in Guangdong.

In June 2010, Pharmacotherapeutics for Eye Disease–Principles and Practices was published by People’s Medical Publishing House. It was the first book co-authored by clinical ophthalmic doctor and ophthalmic pharmacist and now turns to be a handbook of ophthalmic pharmacy in China.

In June 2011, the Department hosted the first round of lectures for Rational Drug Use in Ophthalmology, a National Continuous Medical Education Program. More than 300 trainees from seven provinces all over China came to this lecture. This lecture promoted the rational drug use in ophthalmology nationwide. In September 2012, the second round of lectures was opened.

In July 2013, we for the first time successfully hosted National Ophthalmic Pharmacy Conference and more than 300 people from over 10 provinces in China came to this conference.

In December 2013, Department of Pharmacy was elected to be a leader of Ophthalmic Pharmacy Section under the Professional Committee of China Pharmacy Association.

Faced with challenges in the new era, we stick to the patient-oriented spirit to provide more pharmaceutical services. We base our medicine management system on IT technology, keep a close eye on drug quality and provide adequate drugs for the whole hospital. With efforts and a sense of responsibility for pharmacy, we have faith in improving our pharmaceutical services and offering excellent, safe and satisfying services to the general public.
