The 6th National Forum of Postgraduate Students in Ophthalmology & World Congress on Ocular Cell and Regenerative Biology Successfully Concludes

On the 7th to 9th of August, 2015, Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center (ZOC in short) successfully concluded the 6th National Forum of Postgraduate Students in Ophthalmology & World Congress on Ocular Cell and Regenerative Biology. This congress is part of the celebration of 50th anniversary of ZOC. 

In this congress, 28 renowned professors at home and abroad were invited to be guest speakers, and Prof. Napoleone Ferrara, a 2014 Gairdner Award laureate and a member of Nation Academy of Sciences in the United States was one of them. Gairdner Award is thought to be related to Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. We also invited Prof. Tomas Reh, a famous Neurobiologist and Prof. Michael Simons, a world leading Vascular Biologist. We also invited scholars on ophthalmology, namely Kang Zhang (UCLA), Xianjie Yang (UCLA), Vadim Arshacsky (Duke University), J. Fielding Hejtmancik (NEI/NIH) and Xuri Li (ZOC). This congress attracted over one hundred teachers and students from 17 key universities in China on ophthalmology, including Peking University, Fudan University, Tianjin Medical University, Fujian Medical University and so on. 

Prof. Liu Yizhi from our Center delivered the chairman’s speech to extend his warmest welcome to guest speakers invited, teachers and students from 17 universities present. He hoped that this congress could improve the academic performance of ophthalmology in China and promote exchanges in ophthalmology. 

The congress served as a communication gala in the field of ophthalmic cells and reproductive biology in that it advanced academic exchanges and technical cooperation in ophthalmic cells and reproductive biology. It could improve the research level in this field and promote the interdisciplinary and all-round development on ophthalmic cells and reproductive biology in China. The postgraduate forum in the congress provided constant momentum for ophthalmic postgraduate students to explore this field, and enhance their capability of innovation and research. After the congress, many guest speakers sent letters of acknowledgment to us, stating that they benefited a lot from Chinese experts and students present in the congress and wished a continuous communication and cooperation in the future. Students also thought highly of this congress. Not only were they acquainted with so many world famous experts, but they also deepened their understanding of ophthalmology. They all considered the trip to Guangzhou worthwhile.
