Zhongshan Ocular Stem Cell Symposium, hosted by Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center (ZOC) of Sun Yat-sen University, was held on November 3rd-4th, 2015. Prof. Chi-Chao Chan, Scientist Emeritus of the National Eye Institute (NEI), National Institutes of Health (USA) and Prof. Ting Xie from Stowers Institute (USA) were the co-chairs of the symposium.

Prof. Yizhi Liu, Director of ZOC, delivered a speech on behalf of the organizers. He extended a warm welcome to the participants, faculty and students. He pointed out that ZOC has made remarkable achievements in ocular stem cell research in recent years. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the ZOC Eye Hospital and this symposium is one way to best celebrate it. He hoped that the ZOC researchers would make the most of this opportunity for face-to-face communication with the leading experts in this field and learn about the latest research work on ocular stem cells.
The topics of the symposium included “Differentiation and Transplantation of Retinal Ganglion Cells”, “Exploring regeneration potential of adult mammalian retinas”, "Corneal Epithelial Stem Cell Niche: from Basic to Clinic”, “Stem Cell Transplant” and “Use of Human Stem Cell-Derived Retinal Cells for Drug Discovery” together with others.
Panel discussion
At the panel discussion session, Prof. Donald Zack, Prof. Ting Xie, Prof. Kang Zhang and Prof. Guo-Tong Xu answered questions raised by graduate students present in the audience. This face-to-face informal discussion between the Professors and the students made for a warm and congenial atmosphere and the session was enjoyed by all.The invited speakers at the symposium were Prof. Jeffrey Goldberg from Stanford University, Prof. Donald Zack from Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Wei Li from NEI, Prof. Robert Nussenblatt from NEI, Prof. Ting Xie from Stowers Institute and Prof. Kang Zhang from University of California, San Diego, as well as Prof. Guo-Tong Xu from Tongji University, Prof. Wei Li from Xiamen University, Prof. Shuyi Chen from ZOC, and Prof. Hong Ouyang from ZOC.
