From September 19 to 23, Ashraf Sewelam, Vice President of Mansoura University (MU) of Egypt, Tharwat Mokbel, previous Director of Mansoura Ophthalmic Center, and Mohammed Sallah, Director of MU International Relations Office, visited Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center (ZOC) of Sun Yat-sen University.

On the morning of September 21, Vice President Sewelam with two delegators from MU signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with ZOC. The signing ceremony was held by Junwen Zeng, Deputy Director of ZOC. At the ceremony, Dan Xia, Secretary of the Party Committee of ZOC, welcomed the delegation. She pointed out that the increased cooperation between ZOC and MU relies on the unremitting efforts of Professor Lezheng Wu at ZOC, Deputy Director Junwen Zeng and Vice President Sewelam, and she extended her heartfelt thanks to them. Secretary Xia also expressed her best wishes to the prospect for the bilateral cooperation, hoping that as ZOC and MU continually deepen their cooperation, they could jointly build a high-level ophthalmology platform for medical services, blindness prevention as well as scientific and technological cooperation. In the speech made by Vice President Sewelam, he mentioned that ZOC and MU have their own strengths in ophthalmology and show a great prospect for cooperation. He hoped that in the future, the two sides could follow the MOU and, based on that, continue increasing all-round cooperation in ophthalmology, optometry and related disciplines, as well as in building a platform for talents and scientific research, so that both sides can achieve win-win results.

From 2000 to 2014, Professor Lezheng Wu at ZOC served as President of Afro-Asian Congress of Ophthalmology and presided over the Congress. Since then, ZOC and MU have gradually strengthened exchanges between experts and scholars, and deepened cooperation between each other. In 2015, Professor Lezheng Wu attended the 18th Afro-Asian Congress of Ophthalmology held in Egypt and visited Mansoura Ophthalmic Center, laying a solid foundation for the signing of the MOU between the two organizations.

The Mansoura Ophthalmic Center provides the best modern ophthalmic medical services in Egypt and boasts cutting-edge modern clinical treatment; and ZOC is China's largest ophthalmic medical teaching institution. The cooperation between the two sides strengthens exchanges and cooperation between China and African countries in the medical field, and responds to China’s policy of promoting cooperation in health and family planning among areas along the “Belt and Road”. Therefore, it is a meaningful attempt to advance national health in areas along the Silk Road to create a “Silk Road for Health”.

During their visit, Professor Ashraf Sewelam and Professor Tharwat Mokbel made academic speeches titled “Recent Approach for Capsulorhexis + Phaco. in High Myopia” and “Management of Glaucoma in Refractive Patients” respectively. They also shared with teachers and students at ZOC the successful experience of the Mansoura Ophthalmic Center in treatment of high myopia and glaucoma. In addition, Vice President Sewelam and another two delegators paid a visit to Professor Jian Ge at ZOC. The both sides discussed about the clinical treatment and scientific research projects related to glaucoma, and reached a primary intent of cooperation.
