On August 20, 2016, the Ophthalmology Strategic Symposium 2016, co-hosted by Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center (ZOC), State Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology (SKLO) and Guangdong Medical Association (GMA), was held at Zhudao Guest House in Guangzhou. The attendees include Yanrong Sun, Director of the Department of S&T for Social Development; Academician Qi Zhou; Academician Honghao Zhou; Academician Lin Chen; Lixin Xie; Prof. Ningli Wang, Chairman of the Chinese Ophthalmology Society (COS); standing members and members from COS; standing members from Guangdong Ophthalmology Society and principal investigators from ZOC.

The opening ceremony was hosted by Prof. Yizhi Liu, Director of ZOC and Dean of the Eye Hospital. Prof. Liu began his speech with his thanks for the presence of leaders from Ministry of S&T and ophthalmologists. He suggested that China has been ready to embark on the road towards a technological and scientific power, and that the innovation-driven development has gone mainstream. He also pointed out that ophthalmologists should actively participate in national key research and development plans, devote themselves to advanced basic research, and improve the ophthalmology while addressing our country’s major demands. He hoped that the Symposium could help to narrow down the development direction, highlight the key points of scientific research, and promote the development of SKLO and China’s ophthalmology.

Prof. Ningli Wang, Chairman of COS, also delivered a speech. He pointed out that in recent years, SKLO had published papers on various top-notch journals and had made remarkable academic achievements. With the joint efforts of ophthalmologists, China’s ophthalmology had ranked high among clinical subjects both at home and abroad. “Apart from death, nothing can be more horrible than losing one’s vision,” he said. Small as those ocular organs, they are closely linked to every single system of human body. Prof. Wang also hoped that ophthalmologists could extend their research from pure ophthalmology to integrative medicine, continue caring for eyes and push forward the development of ophthalmology.

Director Sun of the Department of S&T for Social Development gave a comprehensive and detailed interpretation on the 13th five-year policies for science and technology innovation, including the 13th Five-Year Plan for National Science and Technology Innovation, the 13th Five-Year Plan for Social Science and Technology Innovation, the 13th Five-Year Special Plan for Medical Science and Technology Innovation and the 13th Five-Year Plan for Science and Technology. She expressed that since the launch of the 13th Five-Year Plan, innovation had become a keyword and been integrated into the national scientific and technological development fund, strategic research and resource allocation. She hoped that the basic ophthalmological research could be innovated and therefore clinical research could turn into productivity.

Subsequently, the Symposium was divided into five sections, revolving around hot issues like the current development strategies for ophthalmology, targeted therapies for common eye diseases likely to cause blindness, the application of stem cells in ophthalmology, neuro-ophthalmology and translational medicine.
