On March 18, 2022, the 7th Annual Meeting of Medical Scientists (2022) and the 2nd Professional Development Forum of Physicians was held, and the meeting released the "China’s Top 10 Advances in Ophthalmology " in 2021. Two research results led by Professor Yizhi Liu's team and Professor Haotian Lin 's team from Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center were selected into the "Top 10 New Diagnosis and Treatment Technologies", and one research result led by Professor Xiulan Zhang's team from Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center was selected into the "Top 10 New Medical Equipment and Popular Science Works".

l The new corneal “trapezoid” tunnel incision reduced the incidence of incision-related corneal implications during phacoemulsification surgery

The team of Professor Yizhi Liu has created a new corneal “trapezoid” tunnel incision shape during phacoemulsification surgery recently. This new incision shape can reduce the incidence of incision-related corneal implications effectively for the inexperienced surgeons and patients with unhealthy corneas with higher risk of corneal implications. These achievements from serial studies have been recognized widely by peers and reported twice in JAMA Ophthalmology in 2021.

l World’s first AI real-world research on multiple eye diseases

The team of Professor Haotian Lin associated with Airdoc Technology Co., Ltd. innovated the recognition technology for multiple eye diseases, verifying the accuracy of AI software in large scale real world research for the first time. With the full-chain collaboration from clinical findings, research and development of intelligent screening and diagnosis to clinical application, it will lay a solid foundation for the popularization in clinical application.

l Intelligent Diagnostic Platform of Glaucoma– iGlaucoma

Professor Xiulan Zhang's team created the multi-modal intelligent diagnostic platform of glaucoma – iGlaucoma, which is designed for automated glaucoma screening and diagnosis. They also led the release of the first standard of annotation and quality control for color fundus photographs, to standardize the industrialization and promote the benign development of ophthalmic AI. 19 articles have been published in the Ophthalmology, NPJ Digital Medicine and other high-impact peer-review journals.
